Two-column resume templates look modern and fit a lot onto one page. They are also one of the most common reasons a strong resume comes out of an ATS looking confused.
What goes wrong
A parser reads text in sequence, and with tables and columns that sequence is not always the one a human eye follows. Some parsers read across the page line by line, mixing the left and right columns. Others read table cells in an order you did not intend, or skip content inside text boxes.
Here is a two-column layout as a person sees it:

And here is how a parser reading across the lines might see it:

The job title, employer and dates are now tangled up with skills, which can break the work history in your candidate profile.
Layouts that commonly cause trouble
- Templates with a sidebar for contact details or skills
- Tables used to line dates up on the right
- Skills arranged in a grid of cells
- Text boxes and shapes holding whole sections
- Skill rating bars, stars or charts, which contain no readable text
How to get a clean look without tables

The plain version is just as easy for a recruiter to scan, and the category labels add useful keywords of their own.
How to check your resume
Copy all the text from your file and paste it into a plain text editor or the scanner. If sections interleave or dates drift away from their jobs, switch to a single-column layout.
